Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check
What is the Year 4 MTC? (Multiplication Tables Check)
The Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a short, statutory online assessment that takes place each June. It helps schools check how well children know their multiplication tables up to 12 × 12.
The check is completed individually on a computer or tablet and usually takes less than 10 minutes. Children are asked 25 multiplication questions, with a short time limit for each question.
The MTC focuses on a child’s ability to:
Recall multiplication facts quickly and accurately
Demonstrate secure knowledge of times tables up to 12 × 12
Apply their understanding confidently under timed conditions
The purpose of the check is to ensure children have a strong foundation in multiplication before moving into upper Key Stage 2, where times tables knowledge is essential for more complex maths such as fractions, division and problem solving.
If a child finds the check challenging, we use the results to identify areas where additional practice and support may be helpful.
Most importantly, the MTC is just one measure of mathematical understanding. We aim to build children’s confidence, fluency and enjoyment in maths throughout their time at primary school.
