History

At St Matthew’s, History inspires children to explore the past, understand how people and societies have changed over time, and appreciate the diversity of human experiences. Our curriculum encourages curiosity, enquiry, and critical thinking, helping pupils develop a strong sense of chronology and historical awareness.

How We Teach History

In EYFS and Key Stage 1:
Children are introduced to history through stories, sequencing activities, photographs, and artefacts. These experiences help them:

  • Begin to understand the concept of the past

  • Recognise changes over time in their own lives and local environment

  • Develop listening and observation skills, forming the foundation for historical enquiry

In Key Stage 2:
As children progress, they study more complex historical topics, including:

  • The Romans

  • Invaders and settlers

  • Exploration and encounters

  • The Tudors and Victorians

  • Ancient Egypt and Greece

Children also engage in hands-on learning experiences, such as visiting museums, participating in workshops, and enjoying performances by historical reenactors or specialists. These experiences bring history to life and help pupils connect with the past in meaningful ways.

Statutory Requirements

History is statutory for Key Stages 1 and 2, and pupils are expected to:

  • Develop chronological awareness, understanding how events fit into a timeline

  • Know and understand key historical events, people, and places

  • Understand changes in society, and how past events shape the present

  • Develop historical enquiry skills, asking questions, using sources, and evaluating evidence

  • Communicate findings, orally, in writing, and through presentations or creative projects

Our curriculum ensures pupils gain a solid understanding of the past, alongside the skills to analyse, interpret, and explain historical information.

Our Goals for Pupils

By the end of primary school, children at St Matthew’s will:

  • Have a confident understanding of chronology and historical concepts

  • Be able to analyse sources of evidence and draw conclusions

  • Appreciate diverse perspectives from the past

  • Enjoy exploring history through hands-on activities, visits, and storytelling

  • Develop skills to make connections between past and present, deepening their understanding of the world
